In this two-part unit, participants examine the role of the special educator/case manager as a professional who is held to very high standards, an educator with a toolbox full of methods and strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities, and a skilled assessor who manages the data collection, interventions, and progress monitoring of students with IEPs.  Focus areas include the role of a special educator as the facilitator and coordinator of IEP services and the facilitator of communication and collaboration among the IEP team (including students with disabilities, their families, and paraprofessionals).  Finally, the units discuss disproportionality in special education and emphasizes culturally relevant teaching strategies and the awareness and avoidance of microaggressions that hinder relationships with diverse students and their families.
