In this unit participants will study "The Big Five": phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. They will learn the effects of language on reading, the reading process, and the stages of reading development. They will also learn about other factors that influence reading such as student motivation and text difficulty. Participants will research best practices for working with English Language Learners and how to use technology in the classroom. They will synthesize what they have learned in part 1 and 2 of the unit to develop a literacy program for students in grades K- 6 or grades 7-12.
