In this unit, participants explore the skills necessary to develop an integrated approach to incorporating reading and writing skills into math content. Reading and writing are important skills in math class because they help students understand problems, communicate their solutions, organize information, and build important literacy skills. Math has its own specialized vocabulary, and encountering and using math vocabulary in context can help students learn and understand these terms. Additionally, math problems often involve written instructions or word problems, requiring students to comprehend what they are reading to understand the problem and solve it correctly. Reading and writing in math class can also help students develop analytical thinking and logical reasoning skills, which are essential for success in many other subjects as well. By practicing these skills in a math context, math students can become better overall readers and writers, able to comprehend and analyze complex texts, reason logically, and communicate effectively.  In Part 1 of this unit, participants study strategies related to these skills.  In addition to concept reflections, a lesson plan will be written that focuses on vocabulary development in the math content area of participant’s choice.
