Course Description

The purpose of this course is to show teachers how to incorporate multicultural activities into their current curriculum.  We will cover a variety of physical and rhythmic activities from other countries. SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) recommends the following in regards to multicultural integration: 

Teachers intentionally select activities that represent a culturally diverse environment (e.g., dances and games from around the world)."

Among the activities covered will include individual, dual, and team sports.  Examples include Broomball from Canada, Takraw from Southeast Asia, and Bolo Ball from Africa.  In addition, rhythms and dance from around the world will be presented.  Examples include d'hammerschmiedsgselln from Germany, Tanko Bushi from Japan, and Tininkling from the Philippines. By the end of the workshop participants will gain a greater understanding of the importance of integrating multicultural lessons into their curriculum.  Several strategies will be presented on how to infuse that knowledge and wonder of the world into their students and gymnasium classroom.  All activities come with ready to use assessments and are based on SHAPE America's national guidelines.  Come ready to participate and be ready to travel the world!
