Course Description

Crack sealing is an important part of a pavement preservation plan, and as with everything, properly completing the maintenance activities is critical to effective performance.  In this fast-paced workshop, we'll review the best practices and step-by-step instructions for crack sealing, then get out into the field to put it into practice.  We'll identify appropriate cracks for crack sealing - and cracks that are not good candidates for crack sealing, and go through the process.

  • How to identify pavement cracks that are good crack seal candidates - and what cracks are not good candidates for crack sealing
  • When to crack seal - season, temp, weather, in combo with other preservation treatments, etc.
  • Surface preparation, crack preparation (routing), cleaning, application
  • Sealant selection - pavement movement, condition and service life, climate, location and access to restrict use, crack density, etc.
  • Sealcoating
  • Considerations when working with vendors to complete crack seal activities, including specifications, Q&A, etc.

We will also review the basics of a good pothole patch to repair pavement. We’ll review both “quick fix” and more permanent fixes, including partial- and full-depth repair. Discussion will include material options, considerations, quality considerations, and the process.
