Course Description

Salt marshes are dominant geologic features of the East Coast, starting in southern Maine and continuing down much of the seaboard. Colonists considered them prime real estate, but over time, people degraded them and called them wastelands to be filled for more "productive" uses. Most people continue to misunderstand them. This class will have an inside component in which participants will learn about some history and modern issues, followed by a field portion where they will experience the salt marsh up close. The field portion will involve a walk on some uneven terrain and potentially muddy conditions. Low mud boots or old sneakers are recommended. The Monday, October 2 class will run from 11 a.m. to 12 noon and the Friday, October 6 class will run from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
