Course Description

SAFETY - 5 hours / TECHNICAL - 6 hours

*THIS IS A TWO DAY WORKSHOP. Once you enroll in your preferred DAY 2 date (See available Sections), you will be auto-enrolled in the associated DAY 1 date (NOT listed). Attendance on Day 1 (classroom day) is required for participation in hands-on training (Day 2).

This workshop is designed for someone with little to no backhoe experience. This class will touch on grades, but students who want more in-depth learning on grades should attend Lines, Levels, and Layouts with UNH T2 or reference TC3 or another learning opportunity.

Learn how to operate a backhoe with one day of in-classroom training and one day of "hands-on" training. Best management practices (BMPs) and safety practices will be taught, as well as instructor led training in the backhoe. The class size is small, which gives the participants more time with the backhoe and the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the instructors and others in the class.

Anticipated Learning Outcomes:
1. Operate a backhoe to perform a task that may include digging a retention pond or digging a trench and installing culvert or pipe safely and effectively.
2. Demonstrate BMPs of heavy equipment operation including safety.
3. Demonstrate understanding of proper trench safety and rigging.
