TTC-V-292 - Crash Data 101
Course Description
Understanding where, when, and why crashes happen is key to improving road safety—especially when resources are limited. This introductory three-hour session walks through how crash data is collected and managed in New Hampshire, including what fields are captured in the state’s crash report, how data is submitted by law enforcement, and how it becomes available through the NH Department of Safety and other state-supported tools.
Participants will explore how to access crash data, understand common limitations and quality issues, and begin using it to identify potential safety issues on local roads. This class will also introduce helpful tools and programs such as usRAP, the Systemic Safety Project Selection Tool, Road Safety Audits, and the FHWA Crash Tree Maker—resources that help local agencies move from raw crash reports to actionable safety planning.
Key topics include:
-
Crash data collection and reporting process in NH
-
Accessing and interpreting crash data
-
Common challenges for local agencies (e.g., small numbers, data gaps)
-
State and federal tools for screening roadway safety issues
-
Examples of how crash data has informed local safety improvements
No prior experience with crash data required—this course is designed for both technical and non-technical audiences.
