Course Description

A practical, operator-focused course that helps maintenance staff integrate roadway safety awareness into daily work, strengthen their ability to read the road, and support safer conditions across local road systems.

Roadway safety is influenced every day by the work performed on local roads. Maintenance operators are often the first to see changing roadway conditions, such as a shoulder beginning to drop off, vegetation covering a sign, or drainage narrowing a lane.

This course is designed specifically for maintenance operators and frontline public works staff who want to strengthen their ability to “read the road” through a safety lens while performing their day-to-day tasks in the field, and for departments that want to better leverage maintenance responsibilities to support roadway safety awareness.

The course includes both classroom instruction and a guided driving tour of the host community. Participants will travel by bus to several locations for roadside observation, discussion, and practical application of course concepts. 

A high vis vest is REQUIRED for the field component.

Participants will learn how routine maintenance activities can influence how drivers perceive and navigate the roadway. The course also introduces crash reports at a high level to help operators recognize roadway features associated with higher-risk locations and strengthen their ability to read the road for proactive safety improvements.

Topics will include:

• How everyday maintenance activities influence roadway safety on local road
• How to apply roadway observation techniques to “read the road” and recognize conditions that may contribute to driver confusion or error
• Awareness of common roadway and roadside features that affect visibility, predictability, and recovery space
• Differentiate between conditions that can be addressed through routine maintenance and those that should be communicated for further review
• How a proactive maintenance approach can help recognize small issues before they develop into larger safety concerns.
• How the Safe Systems Approach is being utilized, and the role highway agency staff have in institutionalizing Safe System Approach in their work

Attendees will leave better prepared to notice what matters, respond appropriately within their role, and support safer travel on the local roads their communities rely on.

Coffee and donuts will be available in the morning, and lunch will be provided.

Withdrawal Policy: In the event that you are unable to attend a program for any reason, please note you must submit your withdrawal via email to T2.Center@unh.edu or via phone message to 603.862.1362 at least 72 hours in advance of the start of a program to receive a refund. If a withdrawal is not received by UNH T2 at least 72 hours prior to the program start, the full program fee will be charged and is nonrefundable.  Substitutions are allowable at any time, and UNH T2 staff will be happy to assist in registering an alternative attendee from your organization at no cost.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

• Identify roadway conditions that may contribute to crashes while performing routine maintenance activities.
• Recognize when roadway conditions should be addressed through routine maintenance or communicated to the appropriate person for further attention.
• Incorporate roadway safety awareness into day-to-day maintenance activities by identifying opportunities to improve safety as work is performed.
