Course Description

Films have a long history of portraying mental illnesses in many dimensions. They have shown the patient to be either a monster or a victim; the therapists as either scheming villains, bungling fools, or compassionate heroes; and mental institutions either as chambers of cruelty or corridors of caring. In this class, we will look at some of the classic mental illness movies that the students have selected from the films in sessions I through XI as well as new movies. We will look at films revealing the cinematic approach to mental illness and how each movie helps us understand it.
