Course Description

Commissioned by the BBC as a complement to Kenneth Clark’s Civilization, The Ascent of Man aired on television in the U.K. in 1973 and later in the U.S. In thirteen episodes the Polish-born mathematician Jacob Bronowski presented a history of science tied to cultural evolution: “What I present, what has fascinated me for many years, is the way in which man’s ideas express what is essentially human in his nature.” Each class will consist of viewing one 50-minute episode (episode 1, 2, 3, or 4) followed by a 15-minute class discussion. (Caution: Episodes 1 and 2 contain graphic footage involving animals.)
