Course Description

Henry W. Herrick (1824-1906) was a talented wood engraver, book illustrator, and watercolorist. After spending his childhood in New Hampshire, Herrick began his career as an artist in New York, working for several prominent publishers and teaching at the School of Design for Women where he advocated for equal employment rights for women. In 1865, he returned to Manchester where he continued to work as a designer and engraver and took up the art of watercolor. In his later years, Henry W. Herrick spent his time in Manchester painting watercolors and teaching art in his home. He was a familiar figure around town and was affectionately remembered as “Manchester’s Grand Old Man of Art.” The class will feature a slideshow presentation looking at Herrick's life and artwork. Participants will then have an opportunity to see some of his paintings and illustrations in the Manchester Historic Association's collection.
