Course Description

The novel "Bleak House" is a mystery story populated with the extraordinary characters only Charles Dickens could create. The novel's famous opening, of a dense fog enveloping London, is emblematic of the metaphorical fog through which the characters must fumble their way in search of answers. Hidden links connecting the characters only become totally clear as the novel nears its end. We the readers are invited by Dickens to participate in the search, along with the redoubtable Inspector Bucket, and the novel's heroine, Esther Summerson. Dickens gives us much to think about and much to enjoy. Required reading: “Bleak House” Charles Dickens, Penguin Classics edition, ISBN-13: 978-0-141-43972-3.
