Course Description

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a vast ocean current conveyor belt that moves North Atlantic waters based on differences in water density. Fresh water is lighter than salt water, and as the Greenland Ice Sheet melts, increasing amounts of fresh water are entering the North Atlantic and affecting the AMOC. This current shift has occurred in the past (1,600 years ago), dramatically altering the Earth’s climate. Recent scientific studies suggest we may be on the verge of an AMOC collapse. Learn how the AMOC works, the anticipated climate consequences if it collapses and why it matters.
