Course Description

PFAS—often called “forever chemicals”—are a class of compounds that remain in the environment and are present in our bodies, sometimes with serious health effects. New Hampshire has faced its share of challenges with PFAS contamination; Saint-Gobain, a performance plastics manufacturer, polluted groundwater supplies in several communities near Manchester. In Maine, researchers at the Mt. Desert Island Biological Laboratory have studied PFAS in schools and how wastewater from those sites migrates into nearby private wells. This course explores why PFAS chemicals persist for so long and how they affect human health. We’ll compare US and state-level drinking water standards and use data from recent Maine studies to examine what individuals and communities can do to reduce PFAS exposure and contamination.
