Course Description

End-of-life practices are often overlooked in conversations about climate resilience. This course explores the growing environmental and cultural awareness surrounding funeral practices, including natural burial using biodegradable caskets or shrouds rather than cement vaults and using toxic chemicals. Participants will examine trending approaches such as natural organic reduction and mushroom suits, as well as traditional burial and flame cremation, while comparing them with simple body-to-earth burial and its role in carbon sequestration. The course also considers how these practices can foster family and community connection while honoring values of environmental stewardship. Participants will learn about current efforts to expand natural burial options in New Hampshire.
