Course Description

Join the UNH brewery and microbiology staff for a hands-on workshop where you will learn yeast and bacteria lab skills that are critical for quality control in your brewery. In this workshop you will learn to use a microscope to count yeast and determine viability for reliable re-pitching, as well as identifying  stuck fermentations and haze due to yeast. We will then explore beer spoiler bacteria and learn identification techniques using HLP media, gram staining, and catalase testing. After lunch the seminar series lead by the UNH Brewing Lab and Hubbard Center for Genome Studies will discuss starting a brewery lab program, basic yeast biochemistry, and yeast and bacteria genomics.  No prior lab experience is required, but register early as there are only 20 seats available in the morning workshop.
