Course Description

In Child & Family Systems, participants will learn how substance misuse impacts family members, including issues of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, access to care, and other cultural differences. The program includes exposure to child development models including typical child development, developmental trauma disorder, generational impacts, and family systems therapy. Trainees will also learn about cultural differences, language access, and trauma-based care.

The program will empower participants to:

  • Understand concepts related to youth emotional functioning and the systems that make up youths’ environment.
  • Identify and evaluate appropriate supports from family environments.
  • Examine environments and how family factors are affected by substance misuse.
  • Identify problems in family functioning, and identify the needs of affected youth, applying models of support.

Program learning will take place in weekly online seminars and asynchronous online instruction.  Course materials will include a vast array of articles, rich-media, handouts, discussion activities, didactic lecture notes, presentations, assessments, and field relevant resources.
