Course Description

*This course is only open for municipal public works departments and state DOT enrollment*

This is a 5 hr. course (8a-2p with 1 hr lunch/break). Attendees who complete the full course will receive 2 Safety NH Roads Scholar hours and 3 Technical NH Roads Scholar hours.

When using equipment at work, it is always important to know how to operate it safely. This workshop will provide information on how to safely start and operate a chainsaw, as well as maintaining your saw. Other topics include personal protective equipment, safety features of a chainsaw, cutting techniques, and routine cleaning and maintenance. There will also be tips on ways to increase productivity with the chainsaw.

In the afternoon, there will be a hands-on demonstration involving safely cutting down trees with a chainsaw. Participates are then given the opportunity and encouraged to assist with the tree limbing and some cuts to utilize their own chainsaws.

Participants should bring:
1. Chainsaw and maintenance tools (1 chainsaw and set of tools recommended for every team of four)
2. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE): a helmet system (consisting of a head, face & hearing protection), cotton or leather gloves, chainsaw protective chaps, safety toe work boots
3. Supplies for time outdoors after class presentation- including water, bug spray, long clothing appropriate for being in the woods, etc.
