TTC-T-0118 - Road Safety Advocate Program (2 Days)
Course Description
**This is a two day course- attendees must attend both dates - Sept 11 2025 and Oct 9 2025.
The Road Safety Advocate Program is an immersive two-day training designed to equip transportation stakeholders with foundational knowledge and practical tools to champion roadway safety in their communities. Participants will gain insights into the diverse factors influencing roadway safety and leave with actionable strategies to promote safer road systems for all users.
Through a combination of instruction, real-world examples, and interactive discussions, this comprehensive course will cover key topics that every road safety advocate should understand:
-
National and Local Safety Trends: Begin with a broad overview of roadway safety trends and statistics. Understand the national vision toward zero fatalities and the importance of prioritizing safety across planning, design, operations, and maintenance decisions.
-
Human Factors in Roadway Design and Operations: Explore how road users perceive, react, and interact with the transportation system. Learn how limitations in human behavior and cognitive processing impact roadway safety—and how thoughtful design and operational decisions can account for these realities.
-
Traffic Safety Culture: Discover the concept of traffic safety culture and how shifting values, beliefs, and behaviors at both the individual and community levels can lead to long-term safety improvements. Identify strategies to promote a positive safety culture within your agency and across stakeholder groups.
-
Understanding the MUTCD: Receive a clear introduction to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and its critical role in promoting consistency, clarity, and safety in signage, markings, and traffic signals on public roadways.
-
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Examine the intersection of transportation with public health and law enforcement. Learn how these sectors approach safety, where they overlap, and how to develop partnerships that strengthen a community’s overall safety outcomes.
-
Reading the Roadway: Learn how to identify and interpret roadway conditions that may present safety concerns. From informal observations to formal Road Safety Audits, this segment will enhance participants’ ability to assess potential hazards as part of their day-to-day responsibilities.
-
Safety Analysis Techniques: Gain an understanding of how safety data is used to diagnose issues and guide countermeasure selection. This module covers both traditional crash-based analysis and systemic safety approaches that target risk factors even in the absence of crash data.
-
Local Road Safety Planning (LRSP): Wrap up the course by learning how to develop and implement a Local Road Safety Plan, a vital tool for prioritizing safety improvements, securing funding, and demonstrating community commitment to roadway safety.
Key Takeaways:
- Strengthen your role as a Road Safety Advocate within your agency or region
- Understand and apply core concepts from human factors to crash analysis
- Recognize the power of cross-sector collaboration
- Leave with resources and tools to support the development or refinement of a Local Road Safety Plan
Attendees that attend and complete both days of training will receive 8 Technical hours and 3 Supervisor hours in the NH Roads Scholar program.
This program is ideal for anyone working to reduce crashes and improve roadway outcomes—regardless of technical background. Whether you're in public works, engineering, law enforcement, planning, or public health, this course will help you lead and support a culture of safety in your community.
**The Road Safety Advocate Program (RSAP) is based upon a nationally-recognized program intended to function as a “Roadway Safety 101” training series. It is made for staff in transportation, public health, and first responder agencies who have an interest in roadway safety but are not safety experts.
