Course Description

Oil pastel is a fun, economical, and portable medium that is perfect for drawing outdoors. In this workshop, you'll learn strategies to capture the natural world in color, through examining value, optical color mixing, color theory, mark making, and simplification.

Participants will be working in the classroom and outdoors to create vibrant and alive landscape drawings in class.

In this workshop, participants will learn:

  • to see value, one of the most important aspects of color mixing.
  • how to layer oil pastels to make a large range of colors from a limited number of pastels,
  • and simplify a subject that is full of detail, texture and color to create a cohesive image.

Participants are required to bring their own materials to class.  Recommended materials include: 1 box of oil pastels (16 count or higher),1 HB pencil (or a regular #2 pencil is fine), 1 eraser, and 1 pad of drawing paper (11x14” or larger).
