Course Description

Come and learn how you can use authentic and culturally rich materials (e.g., films, stories, videos, songs) to create social justice lessons for your classes. Using theme-based and cultural-content activities, students will discuss and reflect upon class, race, gender and sexuality issues to bring their awareness of social inequity and justice. Importantly, exploring global issues through storytelling and public performance gives students a voice to build deep cultural self-awareness and social justice perspectives, and strengthen their linguistic and critical thinking skills. The workshop will showcase sample units centering around communication through input- and output-based tasks over grammar instruction. You will learn how to design thematic units that include standards, objectives and assessment using a variety of authentic resources and easy-to-use digital tools.
