Course Description

Comprehension is often called the purpose of reading, and it is also incredibly complex. When students seek to comprehend a text, they link sound patterns to letters, decode, recognize words by sight, engage background knowledge, understand vocabulary, make inferences, and use literacy knowledge… all at the same time and instantaneously. In this course, participants will learn about current research in reading comprehension, including the science of reading and balanced literacy, and the factors that impact how we make sense of what we read. Participants will then use those understandings to develop question-based teaching practices that support readers.
