Course Description

Many municipalities have taken the first step in strategically managing their pavement network by collecting data on the current status and health of their road system.  This data forms the framework of a pavement management plan, which can help support future preservation activities aimed at extending the life of the roadway. However, not all paved roads are the same and there certainly is no one magic treatment or process that is the best fit for maintaining all paved roads. This course will go through a wide variety of options available to maintain and rehabilitate your pavements, including options from full reconstruction to traditional mill and fills to preventative maintenance surface treatments. Course discussions will examine when and where different applications are best suited, how to plan for your projects, and the costs associated with different treatment options and strategies.

This course, designed for municipal administration and elected officials, Highway & DPW Management, Road Agents, and other highway practitioners that make decisions and day-to-day recommendations on road network management, will provide an overview of numerous aspects of road maintenance to help make fiscally responsible and beneficial decisions in maintaining road networks, as well as to support pavement practitioners in responding to taxpayer questions and challenging discussions regarding road maintenance plans.

Various resources, tools, and calculators will be introduced to support further understanding and effective dialogue on pavement management, as well as the NH Statewide Asset Data Exchange Service (SADES) Road Surface Management System (RSMS) utilized by NH’s RPCs will be briefly introduced. Attendees will leave with a wealth of valuable information, an awareness of next steps and tools to support their important work with communities, as well as a larger peer and professional network.

This course is open to NH municipal public works employees, municipal administrators and elected officials, Regional Planning Commission staff, and state DOT employees.

Coffee and donuts will be available in the morning, and lunch will be provided.
