Course Description

Imagine what it would be like if your direct reports and colleagues were willing to talk non-defensively about the important and difficult issues that needed to be addressed.

Imagine if an employee who seemed unmotivated and disengaged was willing and able to bring up what is going on with them, so you two can work it out together and they can become a productive, motivated member of your team.

What about people from different departments or different shifts you find it hard to work with…what if you and they could talk comfortably about what’s going on, get it resolved, and enjoy a harmonious relationship?

All these are more likely to happen when you’re skilled at creating psychological safety.

When someone feels psychologically safe, they’re willing to talk about uncomfortable issues, share their ideas and opinions, and talk candidly about what’s going on with them rather than make excuses or give bogus reasons (i.e. ones that sound reasonable, but aren’t the real reason they’re upset).

When people feel psychologically safe, they’re able to hear what you have to say, including hard-to-hear feedback.

In this seminar, you will learn how to create psychological safety and facilitate candid, unguarded, productive conversations that can lead to better working relationships, reduce unwanted turnover, and boost employee engagement.

Topics Include:

  • What Psychological Safety Is and Is Not - Hint…it doesn’t mean every conversation become easy, just a lot easier. It also doesn’t equal “I’m uncomfortable, therefore you aren’t being psychologically safe.”
  • Why It’s Important - What Google’s research revealed about psychological safety and performance. How psychological safety impacts individual relationships, workplace culture, unwanted turnover, “quiet quitting,” and employee engagement.
  • What You Need to Know About the Brain and Psychological Safety - This includes how the human nervous system picks up on unconscious “cues of threat” or “cues of safety” and how that sets up a person to reject or receive your message.
  • Language Patterns and Behaviors That Signal “You can talk openly” - We will cover specific phrases that have proven to invite people to speak openly as well as common ones that shut people down and trigger defensiveness.
  • How You Can Use This in Specific Situations - We will brainstorm how to deal with situations that are relevant to seminar participants. We won’t do role plays, but instead use a comfortable approach called The Group UnRole Play, where we try on different verbiage without playacting.
