Course Description

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This program is scheduled as a face-to-face classroom training during the Fall 2020 semester, but may be moved online due to future recommendations for distance learning due to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).  Any updates will be posted on this page and all enrolled students will be notified by email of any anticipated curtailments.

Is social studies getting squeezed out of your everyday instruction? Do your students always have questions about our communities and are eager to share concerns or issues that arise at school?

Let’s turn those two concerns into civic action! Social studies learning should address these questions: what do we know about these issues, what resources do we need, and how can we affect change?

This workshop will provide an opportunity to develop a community-based, interdisciplinary unit, incorporating the literacy, math, and science concepts you are already using in your classroom and welcoming the social studies concepts from the College, Career and Civic Life Framework.

Our time will be collaborative and creative, so bring your unit to revamp or disciplinary content to reimagine. We will brainstorm community connections and contacts in your area as well as performance tasks that place student learning in real world contexts.
