Course Description

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This program is traditionally a face-to-face classroom training program, but the Summer/Fall 2020 Semester section will be held online as we prioritize distance learning in response to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). .

*Please note: Access to manipulatives and content shared will be altered to incorporate ideas for best practice in remote/virtual settings.

Students at the elementary level spend most of their math time developing an understanding for whole numbers and whole number operations. These understandings are the foundations for other mathematical ideas such as fractions and decimals.

Too many students leave the K-2 level with limited understanding of number composition as well as addition and subtraction. Many schools are facing this common issue, which leads to potentially larger gaps of mathematical understanding as students begin to explore multiplication and division in grades 3 through 5.

Participants in this session will explore some of the factors contributing to the lack of understanding in the primary grades. Additionally, participants will learn the progressions for developing number and operations in base 10, how these progressions and understandings can be used for immediate interventions, as well as how it impacts the understanding of fractions and decimals and other higher-level mathematical ideas in grades 3 through 6.
