Course Description

Let’s get social! Counteract the pressure to minimize social studies instruction, and learn to construct inquiry-based social studies learning with social, cooperative and collaborative opportunities. Encourage your students to engage in the social studies practices taking place in the real world (i.e. law, debate, citizenship, business ownership). In this workshop, participants will take part in communicative, social studies activities, (i.e. interviews, discussions, surveys, court case studies) that frame interdisciplinary units incorporating literacy, math, science and social studies standards. Teachers will engage in their own inquiry-based learning and walk away with an individually designed interdisciplinary unit outline for applicable standards in their classrooms, inquiry notebook ideas, experiential classroom activities and a collaboratively brainstormed list of mentor texts and digital resources.

Please bring a laptop or other means to research, revise lessons plans or units and record information. Also, please bring a unit or standards that you are planning to reinvigorate or adapt for your students. It is suggested, but not required, to bring social studies mentor texts or online resources to share, that will support your social studies instruction.
