Course Description

What is the Winter Writing Retreat?

On the most basic level, the retreat is a space to work in the company of others. Many attendees find that this creates a sense of accountability and community. In-person, the Graduate School provides coffee, tea, and snacks to fuel your productivity. Lunch is also provided every day, so you don’t have to worry about bringing anything besides your work! In addition to dedicated space and time to work, we have optional workshops scheduled to support your writing. Lastly, we have faculty members who will be available for consultation during the retreat so you can get feedback on your work. The retreat is all about supporting you in your work, whether you just need time and space to write, or want to learn skills to improve your writing.

What can I work on at the retreat?

If you have work that you can do quietly at a desk, you can do it at the retreat! Examples of non-writing work include coding, data analysis, statistics, creating presentations, illustrating, and reading. The retreat features both quiet and chatty spaces because we know everyone works differently.

Who can benefit from the retreat?

All graduate students and postdocs! We're here to support YOU in whatever you need to work on.

Where and when is the retreat held?

The retreat will be held from January 16-20, 2024 (Tuesday to Saturday) with online and in-person options. In-person, we will meet in Hamilton Smith Hall (also known as HamSmith, located in between Thompson Hall and the MUB). We have several spaces reserved: HS 232 for workshops, HS 240 for conversation, snacks & beverages, and HS 205 - a large lecture hall with plenty of space to spread out (and everyone gets their own outlet to charge their laptop!). Online, we will meet on a central Zoom link with various breakout rooms available. During previous online retreats, some attendees stayed on Zoom all day for accountability, while others logged in just for social time--we'll leave that decision up to you.
