Course Description

Managing winter operations can be challenging even for the most experienced supervisors and highway department leaders.  Besides the unpredictable such as extreme weather events, there are the dynamics of which materials to use when, balancing staffing, public relations, and budgets. In this workshop, we'll prepare your team's supervisors and managers to make confident decisions, as the result of proper planning and preparation.

Discussion will include a thorough review of the latest materials and options for snow and ice control, including liquids, treated salt, and brine, as well as emerging technologies in Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) and truck and plow technologies.  We'll review how salt works - and doesn't - as well as why many highway departments have moved away from utilizing sand.

We'll also review the following areas of winter operations planning and management:

  1. Developing policies that match your budget and resources
  2. Resource planning
  3. Training and preparing the team
  4. Plow Route Optimization
  5. Storm Response Planning and Decision Making
  6. Public Relations

This course is open to municipal public works, state DOT, and road agents only.  It is recommended for DPW administrators, directors, assistant directors, supervisors or crew leads.
