Course Description

Students will have the opportunity to encounter the psalms, the ancient poetic prayers of Israel, as they were adopted by the first Christian communities and continue in use today. The course will include a short historical tour of the composition and uses of the Psalms and a close reading of several, including Psalms 22, 23, 42-43, 69 and others. Students and their guests will also be invited to join the Benedictine monks of Saint Anselm Abbey for Vespers, the evening prayer of the Church, when the Psalms are employed extensively in the English chant. Three sessions. Copies of selected psalms will be available, but students may wish to bring their own Bibles as well.
