Course Description
This course can be taken for NH Roads Scholar credit any time in the month of Aug. 2024 and proof of completion submitted to UNH T2 to receive credit. Refer to Receipt Notes for detailed instructions on how to access the course materials.
Technical experts, engineers, and specialists other than public relations professionals are not always trained or skilled at conveying concise messages to the public, media, and stakeholders; however, they are often called upon to represent their agency to these audiences. This course covers basic communication skills, appropriate agency representation, best practices, and general public relation guidance for both proactive and reactive communications.
There are three modules that make up this course:
- Representing Your Agency
- Responding to Requests for Information
- Digital Communications
Target audience: The target audience for this course is engineers, construction managers, technicians, inspectors, contractors, and any other staff who are in the field and/or may be called upon to answer questions from reporters, public officials, or stakeholders (property owners). This course is not geared toward public relations (PR) or public information officer (PIO) professionals; however, the target audience may feed information to PIO professionals within their organization.
Learning outcomes: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the importance of internal and external communications;
- Recall general tips for speaking with the public or media;
- Describe situations when you should not communicate to the public or media;
- List best practices for responding to the public and media when asked for information;
- Recall basic communications strategies for use in public meetings;
- Describe how crisis communications differ from day-to-day communications;
- Describe the ways in which an agency may leverage social media in communications; and
- List the do’s and don’ts of agency employees when it comes to social media use.
