Course Description

This course can be taken for NH Roads Scholar credit any time in the month of Oct. 2024 and proof of completion submitted to UNH T2 to receive credit. Refer to Receipt Notes for detailed instructions on how to access the course materials.

Roadway departure crashes are frequently severe accounting for over half of all traffic fatalities in the United States. The FHWA defines a roadway departure crash as a non-intersection crash which occurs after a vehicle crosses an edge line or a center line, or otherwise leaves the traveled way.

This course provides important information on hazards related to roadway departures and the safety countermeasures aimed at preventing and reducing the severity of roadway departure crashes. This course will focus on the installation, inspection and maintenance of these roadside safety features and appurtenances.

Target audience: The target audience for this training includes members of the transportation industry involved in the installation, inspection, maintenance, and oversight of roadside safety features and appurtenances. This includes technicians, inspectors, crew leaders, public works department officials, or anyone overseeing a highway project.

Learning outcomes: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe strategies to identify and mitigate roadside safety departure hazards;
  • Summarize strategies for keeping vehicles on the roadway;
  • Describe safety strategies that enable vehicles to safely recover from a roadway departure;
  • Explain design approaches that can be applied to curves; and
  • List strategies that reduce crash severity.
