Course Description

New England has a rich and complex geologic history, and nowhere is this more evident than in the Granite State. We will explore the physical geologic factors that shape New Hampshire, starting with its bedrock features and Appalachian Mountain heritage. However, the majority of our focus will be on the physical landscape we encounter daily. This includes the lingering effects of the last great glaciation—kettle holes, moraines and eskers—how open-water ponds turn into bogs, the constant effects of mechanical and chemical weathering, the influence of stream erosion, the shaping of our coast by tidal currents and wave action and finally, the human impacts on our state’s landscape. All of these are intertwined with our unique geologic heritage.
