Course Description

Imagine a world where nobody has to die from vehicle crashes. If we're to achieve zero deaths or serious injuries, the responsibility for safety on our roads falls on us all. This course focuses on just that—and on something called the Safe System approach. A Safe System approach acknowledges that the human body is vulnerable, and this vulnerability is considered when designing and operating a transportation network to minimize consequences of crashes.

The five essential elements of a safe transportation system are how safe you drive or use the road, the safety of the vehicle you are in, the speed you travel, the roads and safety conditions provided for you, and the post-crash care in case of an accident. This course also highlights low-case safety improvements you can make to improve the safety of our transportation system for all road users.

This course is intended for a variety of positions within local agencies and tribal governments, with an emphasis on those who are focused on improving transportation system safety for all road users. Training includes:

•              Introduction

•              Safety Countermeasures

•              Countermeasure Implementation

•              Creating a Safety Culture
