Course Description

Submitted to NASW NH Chapter for Category 1 CE Credit

Bipolar and related disorders is an old diagnostic category with a great deal of ground-breaking information. The DSM-5 committee has reorganized the chapter on bipolar disorder, given it a new name and placed it between two diagnostic categories in a novel series.

This workshop will include:

-- a full sweep of the new information and highlight each DSM-5 section with hot-off-the-press bipolar research;

-- a review of the current data on the diagnosis of bipolar disorders in children and youth will be reviewed to improve diagnosis;

-- an investigation of biological markers common to the bipolar disorder and related disorders;

-- an examination of manic, hypomanic and major depressive episodes; and

-- a discussion of the seven diagnostic categories: Bipolar I Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder, Cyclothymic Disorder, Substance/Medication-Induced Bipolar and Related Disorder, Bipolar and Related Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition, Other Specified Bipolar and Related Disorder and Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorder.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to list and explain the nine specifiers that are necessary for complete diagnosis and the eight classic symptoms that overlap with the bipolar disorders.
