Course Description

Cosponsored by the UNH Institute on Disability

This workshop focuses on the critical features of evidence-based classroom management strategies with the focus on prevention of disruptive behavior. In this workshop, participants will: explore creative strategies and the function of behavior to better support students with emotional behavioral challenges in the regular classroom; discuss and practice specific intervention methods utilizing Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS); explore tools to assist teachers to evaluate and enhance their teaching practices; learn a simple process to understand challenging behaviors and a method to intervene and redirect these behaviors; increase knowledge of evidence-based classroom management practices, and understand how to apply a function-based perspective in supporting students. Practical tools for self-assessment of effective classroom management practices will be shared and an action plan will be developed to increase the use of these critical features. Participants will have time to plan, interact with others and ask questions. Case examples are encouraged to help in the planning and discussion. This workshop is for educators, school counselors, psychologists and behavioral specialists. The workshop, Exploring School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), is a complementary workshop but not a prerequisite.
