Course Description

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common psychological disorders affecting children, and can interfere with learning, relationships, and important developmental activities. Child anxiety can manifest in many different ways, making it difficult for educators to accurately identify and address. The good news is that anxiety disorders can be treated effectively with cognitive-behavioral therapy, a well-established, evidence-based psychotherapy that focuses on development of coping skills. This program will provide information on anxiety symptoms and disorders, as well as how these manifest in the school setting and can have an effect on the academic experience. Information will be geared toward children ages 6 to 12, the typical age of onset for anxiety disorders. Educators will practice identifying “red flags” indicating anxiety symptoms and what factors might be contributing to them. They will also develop a theoretical framework for how to think about anxiety, drawing from cognitive-behavioral theory. Finally, educators will learn strategies to help anxious children develop coping skills and practice them in the school setting.

6.0 Category A Continuing Education hours for licensure have been applied for through NASW-NH.
