Teach Close Reading, Close Looking, and Close Listening to Build Understanding and Encourage Children’s Engagement with Texts and Talk

The term ‘close reading’ is a contemporary darling of education jargon, and the practice of close reading has mostly been used in service of test prep and finding evidence to answer text-based questions. However, authentic and child-initiated close reading can lead to deeper thinking and stronger talk about books.

In this workshop, Kathy will show participants how to become closer readers, and present a myriad of skills you can teach children so they get more out of texts and conversations. In addition to considering close reading of written texts, Kathy will share ideas for transferring the principles to visual literacy. Participants will leave changed as readers themselves. Leave with practical classroom ideas you can implement immediately to change the readers you teach.
