Course Description

Abstract

Teaching students to make sense of problems, persevere, and clearly communicate their reasoning is at the heart of high-quality math instruction. This session introduces engaging routines and strategies that offer multiple entry points for learners, promote productive struggle, and build confidence in mathematical thinking. Through hands-on problem-solving experiences, participants will explore approaches that empower all students to see themselves as capable problem solvers, and to find joy in the process.

Objectives

  • Experience a variety of problem-solving routines that promote mathematical discourse and spark student curiosity.
  • Examine guiding principles and classroom structures that foster a supportive, student-centered environment for meaningful problem solving.
  • Clarify and strengthen the teacher’s role as a facilitator, helping students develop a personal toolbox of diverse problem-solving strategies.
